The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission’s Southern Beltway is a 13-mile expansion project connecting the Pittsburgh International Airport at US Route 22 to Interstate 79, west of Pittsburgh. This $800M construction project includes 5 new interchanges, 8 pairs of mainline bridges, 2 pairs of I-79 bridges, 7 local bridges, several culverts, and 2 cashless tolling facilities. Work was completed through 16 individual construction contracts procured by the design bid build process. The new limited access four lane highway opened in October 2021, while construction continues through June 2022. This presentation will provide an overview and status of the project, along with discussions of the challenges faced during construction.
