PRESENTATION PREVIEW

frankford-ave-bridgeTranSystems served as designer on the rehabilitation program that addressed the structural needs of the Frankford Avenue Bridge, the oldest bridge in America, while maintaining its historic character. Located in the northeast section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Frankford Avenue Bridge, was built circa 1697 as part of the King’s Highway, which connected Philadelphia to other eastern seaboard cities. Continued deterioration and recent collision damage to this bridge necessitated that the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Engineering District 6-0 take steps to repair the damage and preserve the overall bridge. This engineering landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988, could not be left to deteriorate until replacement was the only option. PennDOT District 6-0 and TranSystems, using its extensive stone masonry rehabilitation experience, developed a cost-effective repair program providing structural and safety improvements while preserving this historic bridge as an important engineering resource for future generations.  The presentation will focus on the findings of the in-depth bridge inspection, repair methods for historic masonry, Section 106 consultation during construction and provide a review of all work performed on the bridge.
